The Howard Chapel Restoration Appeal 1980s

In 1985, on the initiative of Campbell Matthews, Rector of Wetheral, and John and Veronica Howard, the Howard Memorial Chapel Restoration Appeal was launched. A committee, consisting of local residents, worked tirelessly to raise the £60,000 needed to restore the chapel. Events were held locally and generous donations were received from far and wide, from the children at the local school to the Earl of Plymouth, who was related by marriage to Maria Howard. In the redecoration of the chapel, negotiations took place with English Heritage to ensure that it should be a welcoming place and a fitting setting for the statue.
The Chapel was officially opened in 1988 by the Earl of Carlisle, owner of Naworth Castle and himself a distinguished veteran of World War II.
