John flew Hurricanes and Spitfires with RAF 6 Squadron and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross DFC.
 
In a conversation with Rev Graeme Skinner, summed up VE Day with tears in his eyes and said, ‘I was in London for VE Day. It was tremendous sense of relief’.
